Dr. Joe Berg was a board certified ophthalmologist and the founder of our practice. Born in Macon, he attended college at Emory and Mercer Universities. Medical School was at the University of Georgia Medical School in Augusta, now known as the Medical College of Georgia. He finished Medical School and his Internship as World War II was starting.
A World War II veteran, Dr. Berg served as General Medical Officer to a Flight Squadron based in Germany, Normandy and Belgium. After the war, he studied Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia waiting for a residency in Ophthalmology. Once a position in Ophthalmology came available at Washington University, St. Louis he changed specialties. Dr. Berg finished his Ophthalmology training in Birmingham with Dr. Alston Callahan.

He moved to Albany in 1948 as the first Ophthalmologist in
Southwest Georgia. The other Medical Doctors caring for eyes were Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat physicians (EENT.)
During his career Dr. Berg observed dramatic changes in medicine. From the introduction of penicillin, to the use of Microscopes and intra-ocular lens implants for Cataract Surgery.
Dr. Berg retired in 1998 after 50 years of practice in Albany. During that time he served in numerous Medical and Community Leadership roles. His wife was Evelyn Berg and they had three children – Elizabeth, Susan and Chandler.
Known for his dry wit, he was highly respected by his patients and peers. Always thoughtful and considerate of others, ‘Dr. Joe’ was loved by his staff and family.
