Dry Eye

Dry Eye is a condition that occurs when the tears aren’t able to provide adequate moisture.  A normal functioning eye constantly produces tears to form a tear film, which acts as a moisturizer and lubricant.  For someone with dry eye, the lack of moisture causes the eye to become dry, red and inflamed.  The main symptoms are pain in the eye, dryness, and feeling of something in the eye, redness, eye strain, eye discomfort or irritation.

Dry Eye is most common in older adults and women.  However, over-the-counter and prescription medications such as antihistamines, beta-blockers, sleeping pills and pain relievers can cause dry eye.  Overuse of diuretics can also play a role in developing dry eye.  Other times, the cause of dry eye can be unknown.

Treatments include artificial tears, prescription medications or surgery to close the tear ducts.  A skilled doctor at Berg Eye Group will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your individual.
